Using Google Search Console Data to Improve Your Website

Google Search Console is designed to track your website's Google Search performance. From your Google Search Console profile, you can get valuable insights, which means you can see what aspect of your website needs improvement. We recently published Using Google Search Console to Measure SEO part one and part two which covers the top tools and reports that we use within Google Search Console. Today, I want to go over what data to look at and how often you should be doing so.

Monitor your Google Search Console Emails

Google Search Console makes it super easy to monitor major issues with your site by emailing you whenever there is a concern. I’m sure you get several emails a day, but I recommend reviewing those since Google not only lists out the issue but typically recommends how to correct it as well.

Evaluate your Performance Report

SEO professionals have been asking Google for years to give them more data access, and finally, they’ve agreed. We shared a detailed overview of the performance report in a recent blog [link to part 1 article here]

Classify Pages to Link Internally

Google Search Console is a proactive tool that will make recommendations for you, but some of those tools require you to go in and look to receive a recommendation. The Links Report tools will help you to determine what areas of your site need a boost in terms of linking. We recommend checking this at least once per quarter at a bare minimum or monthly if you have the bandwidth for it.

Review Your Keyword Performance

It's easy to get caught up with all the metrics that Google Search Console provides, however it is very important to take the time to review the keyword performance for your website. I recommend checking your keywords within the Performance Report on a monthly basis. This will show you when you're losing ranking equity for keywords that your site is showing up or if you have no presence at all for keywords that are important for your strategy.

These are just a few of my suggestions on how and how often to use Google Search Console for your SEO efforts. If you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out at any time.
