The Importance of Market Research

We strongly recommend that you conduct market research before choosing your audience segments for a Facebook ad. Use a tool like SurveyMonkey to research your existing customers and research new market segments. With that data in hand, you can make informed decisions when targeting your ad. You may already have target audience data and analysis for your marketing and branding efforts.

Another helpful market research resource can be found in your Meta Business Suite. Click Insights to find out more about your current audience and potential audience. You can even see the top pages your audience follows. This is also a great place to check out your account metrics for reach and engagement with your posts.

Audience Options for Your Facebook Ad Campaign

There are three types of target audiences for Facebook ads. These are key for determining the success of a Facebook ad campaign.

Core Audiences

Use your full target market data or information for a custom segment to choose location, demographics, interests, behavior, and connections.

Custom Audiences

Connect with people who have already shown interest in your business by being a customer, using your app, or visiting your website. Step-by-step instructions for creating a custom audience can be found here.

Lookalike Audiences

This option allows you to reach new people who are similar to your existing customers. Detailed instructions for creating a lookalike audience can be found here.
