3 Effective Marketing Campaigns We Loved in 2022

People see thousands of ads a day. It’s overwhelming, I know. Every last one of these ads is part of a greater marketing campaign, and every campaign is part of a goal to outshine competitors and win the war of rapidly evolving consumer trends. Most of the ads people see are quickly forgotten. It’s incredibly difficult to create a viral marketing campaign that sticks with consumers, let alone stands the test of time. Three of what I believe to be the best 2022 marketing campaigns had that rare ability to not just capture people’s attention, but to hold onto it.

3 Effective Marketing Campaigns from 2022

Dove’s “Reverse Selfie”

Yep, Dove does it again. The iconic beauty brand knows a thing or two about how to create a viral marketing campaign—their empowering Real Beauty Sketches campaign has been viewed nearly 180 million times. Last year’s “Reverse Selfie” movement is similarly powerful, revealing the process young girls go through to create “the perfect selfie,” in reverse.

Beginning with the “flawless” final product, we rewind back through all the trouble she went to just to appear perfect in the eyes of friends and strangers on the internet. In a world where 80% of girls distort the way they look online by the age of 13, Dove is encouraging young ladies to start the conversation and join #TheSelfieTalk, for the sake of their precious self-esteem.

The continuity of their origination campaign and the overall positive message make this ad more memorable than most. Given their track record and the fact that they had one of the best 2022 marketing campaigns, you can look for Dove to tug at your heartstrings even more in 2023.

Reddit’s 5-Second Super Bowl Ad

Even though it’s plenty pricey, Super Bowl airtime is priceless. Ad spots during the big game are coveted because they give brands amazing visibility. Those brands that can create a viral marketing campaign using this platform will be widely discussed and sometimes even remembered for years.

In 2022, Reddit’s campaign was standout. Unlike many brands who fork out millions for as much airtime as possible, Reddit took a huge chance by purchasing a baffling 5-second slot. That chance paid off.

The result was an ad so confusing, people thought it was a blunder. The 5-second clip confused people so much, they headed straight to Reddit’s Twitter page to see what was going on. Reddit’s Super Bowl ad became one of the most talked about and shared of the day and one of the most effective marketing campaigns of the year. Talk about a clever way to get attention and make every second count.

CPB London’s “Imagine” Campaign

In their mission to rewire public perception, CPB London put up large signs in public places that asked people tough questions and challenged biases. “Imagine a feminist. Is it a woman?” “Imagine a CEO. Is it a man?” Each poster followed up those questions with a statement and a call to action: “Now imagine a world where gender makes no difference. #BreakTheBias.”

The goal of what would ultimately become one of the most effective marketing campaigns of 2022 was to question unconscious bias, get people talking, and spark a crucial dialogue surrounding gender inequality. CPB London created the “Imagine” campaign to commemorate International Women’s Day and in support of The Young Women’s Trust and Beyond Equality.

With “Imagine,” CPB London effectively fused old-school advertising methods like public signage with new-school messaging. This unique approach allowed CPB London to create a viral marketing campaign that got people talking about something that matters.
